An app icon sits on a crowded home screen competing with dozens of other highly polished designs. Choosing the right color palette is crucial for legibility, brand recognition, and aesthetic appeal.

Contrast is King

The most common mistake in icon design is poor contrast between the background and the foreground logo/symbol. A beautiful gradient means nothing if the central white icon gets lost in a bright yellow background.

Always test your icon in grayscale. If the logo doesn’t pop against the background without color, your contrast ratio is too low.

Meaningful Gradients

Linear and radial gradients add volume and depth, but they should be used with intention:

  • Analogous Gradients: (e.g., Blue to Purple, Red to Orange). These feel natural and harmonious because they sit next to each other on the color wheel.
  • The Light Source Rule: Always orient your gradient as if a light source is hitting the icon from a specific angle (usually top-down). A lighter color at the top fading into a darker, more saturated color at the bottom creates a sense of physical lighting.

Branding Alignment

While neon gradients are trendy, your icon should reflect your product. A banking app might prefer a solid, trustworthy navy blue, while a creative drawing app might embrace vibrant, multi-stop gradients. The color of your icon sets the emotional expectation for the software inside.
